New Light : This talented artist declares “I am Painter”

Painting is just another way of keeping a diary ― Pablo Picasso

This is Rita Kirkman and she can whip up a caricature like nobody’s business! While at the Plano Balloon festival recently, my friend sat for a portrait. I think a lot of people are curious to see how they would look in a caricaturized fashion … I know I would. However, I found myself more interested in taking photos of the artist at work, with her pastel-stained fingers and laser-like focus. Then bing, bang, boom; just like that she was done. Amazing!

The portrait turned out great and we started chatting about how she shines through her artwork. I found out that while Rita can turn out portraits faster than you say “it’s hotter than Hades out here”, her real love rests in her fine art portraits using pastels, as well as paint. The colors and blending really make the subjects leap off the background.

From Rita’s website,, “I’m constantly overwhelmed by the simple beauty and uniqueness of everyday life. I work to capture a moment or a feeling, or to present an ordinary subject in a new way. I want to hold the viewer a moment longer with a sense of wonder, or perhaps a bit of humor. Life is short and fast. I want to slow down and see it.”  – Rita Kirkman

Thank you, Rita, for seeing and expressing the beauty in the world around you and for shining your light!
