It’s Saturday night. What to do … what to do. Well, if you have a friend skating in her first roller derby bout, you go. Especially if it’s at the same skating rink you grew up in (Broadway Skateland), skating to the Bee Gees and wearing a Goody comb in your back pocket. Uh oh, I’m giving away my age. Interestingly though not much has changed in said skating rink, especially the “vintage” lockers and the not so clean ceiling, but that’s part of the charm I suppose. I’ve been to two bouts in the past six weeks and that has included one game of air hockey (I won), two orders of nachos, two suicides (a mix of all the sodas in one cup), one cookie and one large orange Pixie Stick. It’s enough to last me quite a while. After all, I don’t have the digestive constitution of a 10-year-old anymore. Even though I traded in my quads for in-line skates, it was nice to walk down memory lane again, while experiencing the local derby culture. If you’re curious, visit the website for Assassination City Roller Derby at www.acderby.com. They’re on Facebook and YouTube as well. Happy derby-ing!!
